Our Heritage

At Peter Hall & Son, we believe in maintaining the hand skills required to make fine furniture, upholstery and interior accessories.  That’s why we continue to train our staff through our in-house apprenticeships within our five specialist departments to offer world class service and result.

From our base in the Lake District, Cumbria, we employ 15 members of staff, offering fine furniture and cabinet making, antique restoration and conservation, upholstery and reupholstery and woodturning.

February 6

1943 – Peter Hall – Pilot

Peter Hall Fighter Pilot
Peter Hall spent his life deep in the aircraft industry, infatuated with flight since his father bought him a plane ride in 1928. He fought in World War II as an aerial photographer and later a flying ace fighter pilot in which he was awarded with a Distinguished Flying Cross & Bar.
1973

1973 – First Workshop

Having spent his working life as an engineer in the aircraft industry, at 50, the New Zealand born Peter decided he would like to pursue his passion and become a full-time cabinet maker in a place that he knew and loved, Cumbria, in the very north-west of England. So along with his wife, Mary and teenage son, Jeremy, they bought a house and found a piece of land in Staveley with five garages and Peter Hall Woodcraft, as it was initially known, was born.
1979
February 6

1979 – Jeremy Hall Joins The Business

Amazingly and coincidentally, before his father, Peter Hall, set up this business, Jeremy had decided that he wanted to be a maker of ‘special’ furniture, so at 16 went off to Leeds College of Art for 2 years, attaining City & Guilds in cabinet making. Following that he worked for a couple of furniture makers in Yorkshire before gaining a place at West Dean College near Chichester in West Sussex to study Antique Furniture Restoration. Jeremy worked in Oxfordshire for a year, but ultimately he fulfilled his ambition to move back to the Lakes and work with his father. When in 1979, along with his wife Diana, he relocated to Kendal and joined the business.

1983 – First Apprentice In Restoration Department

John Griffiths, a then 16 year old school leaver was taken on. He was a very dedicated and enthusiastic initiate who has developed into an extremely knowledgeable, capable and respected conservator. John was the first in what was to become a long line of apprentices and is still a valued member of the Peter Hall & Son team today.
1985
February 6

1985 – Upholstery Department Created

Shortly after John’s appointment, it was decided that the service could be further enhanced with an upholsterer, and David, a fully skilled man was employed. More than 25 years later he continues to furnish our homes with superb new upholstery as well as offering a full re-upholstery service for much-cherished existing sofas and chairs.
1990

1990 – Showroom And Upholstery Workshop Extended

With the success of the furniture business, Jeremy, having been made a partner in the firm, pushed to expand. The Peter Hall & Son workshops were extended and then a new showroom, offices and upholstery workshop were built onto the existing buildings. An interior design studio was then created to offer a complete service.

2013 – The Third Generation

Will Hall, grandson of Peter Hall, joins the business having completed his degree with honours in furniture and product design at Edinburgh College of Art.

2015 – Becca Hall

Becca Hall Retail Buyer for Peter Hall & Son 2015
Peter Hall’s granddaughter and Will’s sister Becca, was keen to be a part of the family business with its new venture helping to launch the boutique. Having graduated with a degree in illustration, and set up her own illustration business selling unique cards and giftware within the boutique and around the world.
Peter Hall & Son Boutique and Interior Design Studio Windermere

2015 - Boutique & Interior Design Studio

In May 2015 Peter Hall & Son launched their Boutique on the High Street of Windermere as an interior concept store, combining furniture and interior decor accessories to create their unique style.

The interior design studio was moved from Staveley to the new Windermere Boutique to give it a prominent position within the brand.
