Cabinet Making

By the mid 17th Century, the age of the cabinet-maker came into being as a trade devoted itself to only making furniture. This required different skills such as carving, veneering, and marquetry demanded by more sophisticated design.

Since 1972, the cabinet-makers at Peter Hall & Son have been making beautiful pieces of furniture to fit into a huge variety of domestic and commercial settings.

From dining chairs to complex modern desks, every piece is lovingly created in our workshops and overseen by Tim Smith, Head of Cabinet-making with over 30 years of experience in his craft. The timber selected is prime/first quality to reflect the design and skill of the making. Much of the timber we use is cut locally and planked by Jeremy Hall at a sawmill 15 miles away, and then dried in our drying sheds. As well as drying our own timber, we can also buy first quality timber from a number of British timber merchants. The timber is always from sustainable sources and we are proud to have been members of Woodland Heritage since 2005, a British charity founded by a group of traditional cabinet makers who wanted to improve the way in which trees were grown, maintained and harvested in the UK.

If you can visit our showroom during the making of your furniture, we would strongly encourage you to do so and to meet the craftsmen making your items. We currently employ 6 cabinet-makers, two of which are in their apprenticeships and three of which have trained through the company and now are fully trained and able to make complex pieces, from start to finish. Once your furniture is ready for delivery, we can deliver within the North West or use an excellent local company we have had dealings with for over 20 years, to deliver the furniture for us. From setting first foot into our showroom to the delivery of your furniture, we want to guarantee a first class service to you and we will be happy to answer any questions pre, during or post completion of your furniture.

All designs for new furniture are created within 3D modelling software; Shark. Jeremy Hall can then produce technical drawings  for our cabinet-makers to work with, as well as a rendered image of the final piece, to allow you to see how your furniture will look.

Welcome to Peter Hall & Son online. Established as a one-man venture by Peter Hall in 1972, we have grown into a thriving family business situated in Cumbria, the beautiful English Lake District.  We are passionate about what we do and hope that you will want to experience something of it yourself, whether it be for bespoke furniture, antique furniture restoration, upholstery, interior design or woodturning.
