Furniture
Jeremy Hall has moved from a practical knowledge of furniture-making into the design of furniture. Peter Hall offered a range of furniture that was very much of a traditional style, primarily in oak or mahogany. Although these lovely designs are still made today and are often chosen for their simplicity and a style befitting of many clients properties, in recent years, Jeremy has designed many pieces for the showroom that have been more contemporary in style. This has been achieved through the choice of more unusual woods or veneers, where other materials are incorporated such as glass and slate, and where serpentine fronts, curved rails and splayed legs demonstrate the skill of the makers, which is higher now than ever before.
One thing is certain, the inspiration is still from the Arts and Crafts and nature, where the design is not over embellished and the pieces rely on the beauty of the wood and form. We are always keen to know which of our showroom pieces are the most popular with visitors. Certainly the popular choice recently has been the Ash writing table with slate top. When asked what his inspiration behind this piece was, Jeremy Hall stated “My intention in designing this piece was to produce a both aesthetically stunning and functional table. Having found some beautiful English ripple olive ash from a saw mill in Wiltshire, I combined this with a very particular local slate from a small Coniston mine, complimenting the wood figure so well. I wanted to capture the growing form of a tree in the end elevation while giving the overall piece a formal classical balance with the arched brace and symmetrical drawers, designed for both function and aesthetic reasons.”
